What causes spots?

Spots are caused when the oil glands in your skin get inflamed (swell up). Spots are sometimes called acne.

Who can get spots?

Nearly everyone will have a spot or spots at some point in their life. But they are more common in young people.

What are the key warning signs?

Spots come up as red lumps, yellow spots, blackheads or whiteheads.

How are spots diagnosed?

Spots are quite easy to see. But if they are really bad a doctor may need to have a look at them.

How can spots be treated?

There’s a lot you can do to help them get better. Fresh air and exercise can help. Sunny weather is good too – but make sure you wear sun cream when you are out. If your spots are serious, your doctor may give you antibiotics. They doctor can also give you special cream to put on top of the spots.

What about my future health?

Spots can be sorted out most of the time, so don’t worry. Wash your skin carefully with something called an ‘antibacterial’ face wash. This can help prevent (stop) you getting spots.

Our Doc's advice

Don’t squeeze spots! It you do, this can make them worse or they could get infected. Picking spots can also make them scar.
